About This Site...

Hi, welcome to the site. It's designed to support the Menlo Park Presbyterian trip to Lusaka Zambia in March 2009. The focus of the trip is visiting Caregivers that have been supported through the churches partnership with World Vision and the related ministry efforts of World Vision.

Now that we're back we're using the site to share our pictures, stories, and video. Leave a comment or note of encouragement to the team!

We're All Home!

With the Jenke's safe arrival home on Tuesday afternoon, the whole Team is back on American soil. Although, I'm guessing all of us wouldn't mind still being with our new friends and loved ones in Zambia! We have so many incredible stories to share with all of you, and we hope to do so in a way that will accurately portray both the sadness and the hope that we experienced. In the coming days, each of the Team Members will likely post a blog "story" about something that touched them while on this… Continue

Post-Journey Questions for Reflection

As we all continue to ponder and assimilate all that has occured in our lives as a result of our time together in Africa, review our journals and pray for the people we met, consider the following questions....

1. Looking at the trip as a whole, what are your stongest impressions?

2. In what ways have you seen God working in your life as a result of this trip?

3. What values or attitidues do you recognize as changing as a result of our trip?

4. What have you experienced that you mos… Continue

Thursday through Saturday

Thursday, Travel Day, and Friday and Saturday
Wednesday marked the end of our “official” duties in Zambia with the exception of a breakfast meeting we had with Bruce Wilkinson, the Director of RAPIDS, an umbrella organization of charities and relief organizations that operate in Africa to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDs. Bruce brought us up to date on the work the RAPIDS is doing, through a host of great organizations like CARE, World Vision and Catholic Relief Charities, and gave us a chance to v… Continue

Wednesday: Pretty Much Pure Joy

We changed our last day’s schedule with our World Vision hosts to see more of the components of the Area Development Program that we were visiting. Kapalulwe is due east of Lusaka, about 40 KM or so. We had focused on Caregiver Kits and the angels that are the Caregivers themselves, on Sunday-Tuesday, but there is so much more to what WV does to fight poverty and AIDs besides the kits that we wanted to see examples of those efforts. But first, we got to meet and spend quality time with the child… Continue

Hope in the ADP's

Today we visited an ADP, Area Development Program, located in Kapululwe outside Lusaka. The area is semi-rural. ADPs are the result of World Vision coming along side rural communities and establishing firm relationships, identifying the needs/issues present, and creating programs to help them move to goals of independence. After a brief introduction at the ADP office, we split into three groups of six, traveling in large white land rovers over extremely rough, dirt, pot-hole filled roads! Howeve… Continue

We had the honor of attending a Gift-In-Kind distribution at a local children's center - Esther's Needs Care Center. 600 kids, most orphans. In fact, there are 300 in the morning and 300 in the afternoon. As I recall, the 300 we met included 70 full…

What a blessing to have everyone visit with their sponsor children. They are the 'ambassadors' for their community. All of these children had lost both parents, so many of the pictures feature a grandma, or an aunt or uncle. Sponsorship is the foun…

This video feature our visits to the "holistic" ministry efforts of World Vision. Specifically, we met a lead farmer named "Agri". How appropriate is that? He shared how since 2000 when World Vision came, he's been trained on contemporary farming pr…
